More on genital herpes

Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2) and Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) cause genital herpes, a sexually transmitted virus (HSV-1). Although HSV-2 is the most common cause of symptomatic genital herpes, HSV-1 is also a common cause. Genital herpes can be transmitted without causing any visible symptoms on the skin or in the genital mucosa (1). Because HPV is spread through skin-to-skin contact, such as sex, speaking with your sexual partner is even more vital.

Genital herpes is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI). According to the CDC, about 12% of the population (ages 14-49) is infected with HSV-2, with approximately 776,000 new cases reported each year in the United States.
