Sertraline was one of the first antidepressant SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) to hit the market in the United States. Sertraline is sold under the brand name Zoloft, and it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of major depressive disorder in 1992. Sertraline is a prescription medication that may only be obtained through a doctor's prescription.
