Overview of this medication

Paroxetine belongs to the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) family of antidepressants. It may aid in the equilibrium of substances occurring naturally in the brain. Paxil, Paxil CR, Pexeva, and Brisdelle are some of the brands of paroxetine that have been approved by the FDA. Paroxetine is a drug that requires a prescription.

Paroxetine changes the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) that communicate between nerves in the brain (neurons). Paroxetine, like other SSRIs, reduces the amount of serotonin reabsorption by your neurons, resulting in more free serotonin in the brain.

Do not use paroxetine with buspirone (Buspar®), fentanyl (Abstral®, Duragesic®), lithium (Eskalith®, Lithobid®), tryptophan, St. John's wort, amphetamines, or some pain or migraine medicines (eg, rizatriptan, sumatriptan, tramadol, Frova®, Imitrex®, Maxalt®, Relpax®, Ultram®, Zomig®).

Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking paroxetine if you are 65 years of age or older. Older adults should not usually take paroxetine because it is not as safe or effective as other medications that can be used to treat the same condition.

The only antidepressants that don't cause high blood pressure as a side effect are selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as sertraline, citalopram, fluoxetine, and paroxetine. So, make sure the doctor prescribing your mental health medications knows if you have hypertension.
