Overview of this medication

Fluoxetine is an antidepressant medication that was the first SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) to be approved in the US. For nearly three decades, it has been FDA approved and marketed under the brand name Prozac. Fluoxetine paved the way for the creation of other SSRIs (such as sertraline, citalopram, and others), which have less negative side effects than older antidepressants (ie, MAOs and TCAs). Fluoxetine is a drug that requires a prescription.

According to experts, fluoxetine works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Experts believe it is the result of reducing how much serotonin is reabsorbed by neurons, albeit the exact mechanism is unknown (nerve cells in the brain). This can assist patients with depression and anxiety manage symptoms including a lack of interest in activities or panic attacks.
