Escitalopram (generic for Lexapro) works by raising the brain's levels of serotonin, a mood-enhancing neurotransmitter. Serotonin is one of more than 40 messenger chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain that transmit impulses between nerves (neurons). Escitalopram, like other SSRIs, reduces the amount of serotonin that your neurons reabsorb, resulting in more free serotonin in the brain.

Escitalopram and citalopram are both medicines used to treat depression. They may sound similar, but they're different medicines. Differences include: Escitalopram is given in different doses the likely side effects are similar but some people may get different side effects with each medicine.

If you forget to take a dose and remember before you go to bed, take it straight away. Carry on as usual the next day. If you only remember during the night or the next day, leave out the missed dose and carry on as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten doses.
